I am honored and feel privilege to have been elected as the President of the Hong Kong Geotechnical Society (HKGES) for Session 2018-2020. The HKGES was established in 2003 with the aims to (1) enhance the exchange and dissemination of knowledge and experience amongst the geotechnical community in Hong Kong, and (2) promote international collaboration amongst engineers and researchers for knowledge advancement in the field of geotechnics and its engineering applications. Over the last 15 years, with the excellent leaderships of the past HKGES Presidents and the dedication of many committee members, HKGES has established its unique role locally and internationally in serving the geotechnical community. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who has made HKGES a success.
Over the last decade, we have witnessed the construction of many mega infrastructure projects in Hong Kong, including the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, the Central Wan Chai Bypass, among others. All these construction projects were not without tremendous technical challenges, and many geotechnical practitioners had played a significant role in driving successful delivery of these projects. Now that many of these projects are successfully completed, or close to completion, there is a unique opportunity for the geotechnical community to consolidate the lessons learnt via various activities, such as seminars or conferences. This is precisely the purpose and the role of HKGES. Looking ahead, there are many more mega infrastructure projects which are either underway or at the planning stage. While these projects will offer new opportunities for geotechnical practitioners, these projects will bring about new technical challenges. It is important for us to capitalise on past experience and to embrace new technologies. We cannot accomplish this in isolation; active participation and contribution to the technical exchange and knowledge dissemination is the key to success.
